REQUIREMENTS

STUDENT LIFE
The art department is among the largest at the college, averaging 118 majors annually.  The department encompasses much more, however, than a substantial list of courses in studio art and art history.  An active art majors committee organizes lectures, social activities and lunches with professors to foster meaningful exchange outside the classroom.  Outstanding students may also be nominated by their peers and professors to participate in the 1960’s Scholars Program, mandated to invite outside speakers to campus.  Opportunities to interact with graduate students and renowned scholars participating in the Research and Academic Programs at the Clark Art Institute further broaden the experiential scope of majoring in art at Williams.

STUDENT WORK
Art courses require students to express themselves in a wide variety of media and high caliber work is produced during the course of any given semester.   History majors typically write papers of varying length based on the direct encounter with art and library research, studio majors create images, objects, performances and History/Practice students take diverse independent courses many focusing on architecture.  More sustained projects are also possible.  In the final semester as a history major, a student may opt to write a thesis by elaborating and refining a paper from an earlier course.  In the final semester as a studio art major, a student may choose to take the senior seminar, ARTS 418.  The emphasis of this course is on strengthening individual skills and assembling a body of work for exhibition at the Williams College Museum of Art to coincide with graduation.
