This course introduces to students some of the major monuments of Asian art.
with an emphasis on the art of India, China, and Japan. Its contextual approach
helps students gain insight into the aesthetic, religious, philosophical, and political ideas, and cultural phenomena of these cultures conveyed by the works of
art. It also provides students with the vocabulary, techniques, and patterns of
thinking, needed for a critical analysis of visual culture in general.
Format: lecture. Evaluation will be based on five quizzes, class attendance, and
two short essays.
No prerequisites. Enrollment limit: 40. Highly recommended for first-year students.
