RLSP 401(F) Studies in Spanish Literature+

This is a variable topics course. For 1999-2000, the topic will be "The Three Masterpieces of Medieval Spanish Literature: El Cid, El Libro de Buen Amor, and La Celestina." Covering the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries, these three memorable texts invite an in-depth study of the multicultural heritage that helped shape them as well as the influential though puzzling literary genres to which they belong. Focusing on the reasons for which each work became a masterpiece of Spanish literature, we will read the texts closely and use contemporary critical analyses to relate the works to their literary and historical background. Conducted in Spanish. Requirements: meaningful participation in class, several short written assignments, and one final research paper. Prerequisite: any 300-level course or permission of the instructor.
