CHEM 335(F) Inorganic/Organometallic Chemistry

This course is designed for the student interested in the fundamentals of inorganic and organometallic chemistry. It begins with a review of bonding theory, with an introduction to the symmetry-based approach to molecular orbitals. Next, transition-metal coordination and organometallic compounds are examined, focusing on bonding, reaction mechanisms and spectroscopy; applications of these compounds in catalytic processes and organic synthesis are discussed. Some discussion of main-group chemistry and complexes is also included. Laboratory work includes the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a variety of inorganic materials, and will incorporate techniques involved in the preparation and handling of air-sensitive compounds. Format: lecture, three hours per week; laboratory, four hours per week. Evaluation will be based on problem sets, laboratory work, two hour exams, and a final exam. Prerequisites: Chemistry 155 or 256 and 251/255. No enrollment limit (expected: 10).
