ARTS 319(F) Junior Seminar
Theory, criticism and interpretation have played an increasingly important role in the creation and reception of art during this century. Simultaneously, the materials, methods and subject matter of art has expanded into a barely containable field of possibilities. How do we as artists choose a location in this physical and conceptual field? What is the relationship between theory and practice? What theories and practices of the last 60 years now shape how we make, talk and think about art? The format of the class will be guided by twining together reading assignments, studio work and visits to the WCMA. Class work will be complimented by visiting artists and a field trip to New York City. Evaluation is based on class participation, presentations, and studio work, including a sketchbook/journal containing responses to readings and preparations for assignments. There is no lab fee; students will be responsible for providing their own materials. Limited to art majors and required of junior studio art majors.
