Fall 2013 Drop/Add Information

Tutorial Drop Deadline

  • Tutorial Courses may not be dropped after 4:00pm Tuesday, September 3. If you are enrolled in a tutorial and intend to drop it, you must meet this deadline. Tutorial instructors should have sent information regarding the course requirements to all enrolled students. If you have not received any information on the course during the summer and aren't sure you want to remain in the course, you should contact the instructor for further information.

Distribution Requirements

  • Divisional distribution requirements - by graduation you must complete 3 graded semester courses in each of the three divisions.  The courses in each division must be from at least 2 different subjects.  By the end of the sophomore year you must complete at least 2 courses in each division.
  • Exploring Diversity Initiative requirement - by graduation you must complete 1 graded semester course designated as meeting the EDI requirement.  Students are urged to complete the requirement by the end of the sophomore year.
  • Quantitative/Formal Reasoning (QFR) requirement - by the end of the junior year, you must complete 1 graded QFR course.
  • Writing Intensive (WI) requirement - by the end of the junior year you must complete 2 graded WI courses; 1 graded WI course must be completed by the end of the sophomore year. (You are strongly encouraged to complete both WI courses by the end of the sophomore year).

Early Concentration Rules for First-Year and Sophomore Students

  • First-year students may take no more than one course with the same course prefix, nor more than two in one department, in a semester.
  • Sophomores
    • may take no more than 2 courses with the same course prefix, nor more than 3 in one department, in a semester
    • may take no more than 3 courses with the same course prefix, nor more than 4 in one department, during the full year.
  • A student may take no more than a total of 5 courses with the same course prefix, nor more than 8 in one department, during the first two years.
  • Any exception to the above may be requested by a goldenrod petition to the Committee on Academic Standing filed at the time of registration.

 


Petitions and Special Approvals

All petition forms are available in the Registrar's Office or on our website under the Forms/Petitions link.

CAS (White) Petition: 
Credit for one semester of a year (hyphenated) course.
Postpone completion of distribution requirements.

Major Declaration Form (Blue Petition):
Any Junior or Senior changing a single major or adding or dropping a second major.

Concentration Declaration Form:
Declaring or dropping a program.

Early Concentration (Goldenrod) Petition:

  1. First-year students may take no more than one course with the same course prefix, nor more than two in one department, in a semester.
  2. a)Sophomores may take no more than two courses with the same course prefix, nor more than three in one department, in a semester; b) Sophomores may take no more than three courses with the same course prefix, nor more than four in one department, during the full year.
  3. A student may take no more than a total of five courses with the same course prefix, nor more than eight in one department, during the first two years.
  4. Any exception to the above must be requested by a goldenrod petition to the Committee on Academic Standing submitted to the Registrar's Office before 4:30 pm, Wednesday, September 12.

Independent Study (Green) Petition:
For Independent Study (297, 397, 497).  Signatures of faculty sponsor and department chair required. If you are submitting an independent study petition to satisfy the WI requirement please use the Writing Intensive independent study (turquoise) petition.

NOTE that a petition for Independent Study should be submitted before the beginning of the semester in which the independent study will be taken. 

No petition is required for the senior thesis course, essay or project (491, 493, 495), but departments may have their own forms for these courses.

 

Myths about DropAdd

Myth: An instructor consent flag means you just have to e-mail the instructor.
Fact: Instructor consent courses are courses that have a waitlist, sometimes a long waitlist. If you are interested in an instructor consent course, be prepared to accept a 'sorry - no room' answer. Have a backup plan. Contact the instructor by e-mail, at their office or at the first class meeting. If the instructor accepts you into the class, he or she will e-mail the Registrar's Office to add you to the class.

Myth: If an instructor consent course shows as open in PeopleSoft, that means there is space for the instructor to add you.
Fact: The instructor may be filling spaces from a waitlist, so the open status doesn't necessarily mean spaces are open for new students. Check with the instructor, as above, if you are interested in the course.

Myth: The only way to know you have a registration hold is to try to add a class and see if you get an error message.
Fact: You can check for holds, and should, anytime whether registration is open or not. Navigate Self-Service > Campus Personal Information > Holds. If you have a registration hold, take care of it as soon as you can.

Myth: The only way to know a course has a prerequisite is to try to add a class and see if you get an error message.
Fact: You should check the prerequisite in the online catalog course description for any course you are considering. Not all prerequisites are enforced in PeopleSoft; if they are, you can see them on the Class Detail page of the Class Search or on the Enrollment Preferences page when adding a class . If you want the prerequisite waived, you should talk to the instructor.

Myth: After the first class meetings, if a course is open and you can add it in PeopleSoft, you are guaranteed a spot in the class.
Fact: After the first class meetings, instructors may deny permission to add to any student who did not attend the first class meeting. Add the course, but make sure you contact the instructor promptly to confirm that your enrollment in the class is okay and to obtain any notes and information distributed at the first meeting. If the instructor says you can't be in the class, you need to drop it and find another class.
