Scheduled, Self-Scheduled and Take-Home Exams

Self-scheduled and take-home exams are administered from the Registrar's Office in Hopkins Hall.

  • Scheduled Examination--A two hour written examination plus a one-half hour reading period given to all students in the course at a time and location scheduled by the Registrar.

  • Oral Examination--An oral exam individually administered to each student in a course at a time and location mutually agreed to by instructor and student.  Oral examinations may be given in place of all or part of a written examination provided approval of the department or program chairman is obtained in advance.

  • Self-Scheduled Examination--A two hour written examination plus one-half hour for reading that the student may take during the reading period and the first five days of the final examination period.  An examination for each student in a course is brought to the Registrar’s Office by the instructor (no later than the Friday before the self-scheduled exam period begins) and the Registrar's Office oversees administration of this test.  All exams are completed in Hopkins Hall classrooms.  The conditions, under which the exercise is to be completed, including other permissible locations and the use of reference materials, are clearly indicated on the examination by the instructor but the time allowed may be no more or less than a total of two and one-half hours. If you want to have a self-scheduled that is longer than 2 1/2 hours, then the alternative is a TAKE-HOME where you can detail how much time the student is allowed to spend on the exam. Since the registrar's office is only open 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. during this period, this option may require the student to have the exam out overnight.

  • Take-Home Examination--A written examination of greater than two and one-half hour duration retained by the student for no longer than 24 hours.  An examination for each student in a course is brought by the instructor to the Registrar’s Office (no later than the Friday before the self-scheduled exam period begins).  The exam may be picked up by the student during the reading period and the first four days of the examination period and completed at a location of his/her choice.  The conditions, under which the exercise is to be completed, including appropriate writing time and the use of reference materials, are clearly indicated on the examination by the instructor.
