Ordering New Images

The Visual Resources Center will create digital art images per request from all members of the Williams College undergraduate community by either flatbed scan, digital copystand photography or acquisition from an art image vendor. During this transitional era, a slide image may be made by request at the time of the digital image request with certain limitations: if the slide does not exist in either the Williams Visual Resources Center or the Clark Art Institute Visual Resources Library, if it exists but is of poor quality, and if it complies with copyright policy.

Procedure to Request Image Production Onsite:

Most new orders for images can be processed in one-two days. Please check with Chuck Paquette for a definitive estimate.

Check both the slide and/or digital collection to avoid duplication.

1. Bring the materials to be scanned or photographed to the Visual Resources Center. If you wish to order a slide from an existing digital image, you may email the digital image with the Online Image Request Form to Linda Reynolds.

2. Fill out an image request form for each image, including all information requested for the database record and/or slide label.

3. Include the date requested, date needed, and your email address on the form.

4. If the object is oversized and must be out-sourced for professional photography, the charge will be born by the non-faculty requestor.

Procedure to Request Digital Image Purchase:

The Visual Resources Center purchases digital images from commercial vendors, accessed through a consortium, Scholars Resource. Vendors include: Archivision (22,000 architectural images), The Bridgeman Art Library (14,000 images from Western European museums), Davis Art Images (images from American museums including contemporary art), Hartill Associates (a broad collection from prehistoric caves to contemporary architects), Inter-American Institute (images of Spain and Mexico), Kenneth Garrett Collection, National Geographic images of Egypt and the Egyptian Museum, and Saskia (images from major museums of Berlin, Dresden, Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Florence and Rome as well as western and Middle Eastern architecture).

Online image order through Scholars Resource:

Link: www.scholarsresource.com
Login in as yourself and create an account with your own password.
Create new list (upper right menu).
In the line “allow others to view” choose: visible to others at my institution.
Search for needed image, select "add to list."
It will automatically tell you if the image is already licensed to Williams (you will find the image in the Williams VRC Collection)
If not, add it to your wish list.

Email Linda Reynolds when you have done so, specifying when you need the image. She can move the images to her account, order and pay for them. She will contact you as soon as the image is available.
