The Application

Internal Autobiography

Due on February 1, this document gives each applicant the opportunity to explore and share experiences and motivations with the Advisor. This requires careful reflection and thought, and can be thought of as a very early draft of the common application itself.

Evaluations: Using veCollect

In fall 2010, we began using a nationwide service, veCollect, to collect current applicants' letters of evaluation. Please review the helpful PowerPoint before requesting letters of evaluation. Starting December 1, 2010, all letters of evaluation must be uploaded to the veCollect server. The HP office will no longer accept mailed, emailed, hand-delivered, or faxed letters.

Each applicant must request four to six letters of evaluation from professors, supervisors, and others in a position to comment upon achievement, character, skills, and qualifications. At least two letters must come from science professors, and the major department should be represented among the letters. Applicants should plan on requesting these letters in person, if at all possible. It’s a good idea to think about what an evaluator might share in a letter, and to discuss the reasons why they feel the evaluator can provide support.

Summary Evaluation (Committee Letter)

The health professions advisor will write a detailed letter that summarizes an applicant’s strengths, skills, and experiences. This letter draws from professors’ evaluations, the applicant’s responses to the autobiography, and one or more lengthy interviews between the advisor and the applicant. Late in the summer, it is sent to each of an applicant’s medical schools through the secure VirtualEvals system.
