Message:
Curious about your DNA ancestry? Sign up by Fri. Dec. 7! You are invited to participate in the Williams College DNA Ancestry Project! We are looking for 40 student volunteers to donate DNA (painlessly obtained from cheek cells). A segment of your mitochondrial DNA will be analyzed that will reveal the most probable geographic region of origin of your maternal ancestors. MORE: http://web.williams.edu/messages/show.php?id=22526 from Marsha Altschuler, Biology Department
Message details:
At a January 4 meeting all students chosen for the project will be apprised of the project details, the type of DNA information that will be obtained, and the ethical issues associated with participation in this venture. Any volunteer may unvolunteer before DNA samples are taken on January 7. Your DNA information will be placed anonymously on a human mtDNA phylogeny tree to be displayed in the '62 Center lobby at the beginning of Spring semester and later in the TBL lobby. Only you will know which DNA sample on the tree is yours. To be eligible to participate you must * be in residence on campus during WSP and Spring semester '13 * attend a group meeting on Friday Jan. 4 at which project details and ethical issues will be addressed * attend a meeting on Monday evening January 7 at which DNA samples will be collected To be considered as a possible DNA donor, send an e-mail by Friday Dec. 7 at 11PM to Professor Altschuler at maltschuler@williams.edu with the subject line: "DNA ancestry" (no message). Students chosen will be notified by Dec. 12. Any questions, send a separate e-mail with the subject line "DNA questions". This project is being carried out in conjunction with the performances by Baba Brinkman ("The Rap Guide to Evolution") at the '62 Center on Feb. 8 and 9.
