Resources for International Students

Williams’ international students are encouraged to fully utilize the resources of the OCC. We are happy to meet in individual meetings and during our 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. walk-in hours. International students are presented with a unique set of challenges and opportunities as they consider exploring career options through summer jobs, internships, and employment upon graduation.

U.S. visa and immigration laws are complex and make it difficult, if not impossible, to pursue employment in this country. It is important for international students to become savvy to the latest developments in employment regulations, and be ready to respond to windows of opportunity as they open. The links on this page are intended to provide international students with some of the knowledge they need to make the most of any employment options they have.

It is particularly important to heed messages from Laura McKeon, Associate Dean (laura.b.mckeon@williams.edu). She works closely with all of Williams’ international students on issues relating to a happy life on campus. She also has a new colleague, Jenifer Hasenfus (jenifer.a.hasenfus@williams.edu), who has 10 years of experience dealing with visa issues, and her office hours are 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Employer Lists

• List of Employers Hiring Foreign Nationals — From the University of Pennsylvania Career Center. Includes name of organization and position title.
• Companies That Hire International Students — List provided by the Kelley School of Business, Undergraduate Career Services, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.
• Foreign Labor Certification (FLC) Disclosure Data — From the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Employment and Training Administration (ETA). DOL Foreign Labor Certification (FLC) data identifies U.S. employers who completed FLC requests, thereby indicating an interest in hiring foreign workers. The Access database includes organization name, city, state, job title, salary, etc. Information is organized by fiscal year and program (permanent visa, H-1B visa, and H-2B visa).

Employment Information and Job Listings

• Teach First is an independent charity launched in 2002 to bring excellent teachers into challenged secondary schools across the UK. Their mission is to address educational disadvantage by transforming exceptional graduates into effective, inspirational teachers and leaders in all fields. (UK citizens only.)
• The University of Denver has compiled this list of links for International Internships.
• The University of Michigan has compiled these valuable listings for those seeking to go abroad. Work Abroad Web Sites
• Freeman ASSIST - The Freeman ASSIST Program, generously sponsored by the Freeman Foundation, offers educational allowances to outstanding undergraduate students from East and Southeast Asia who are pursuing summer internships in the U.S. nonprofit sector.
• The Riley Guide's International Job Opportunities is an expansive site with job listings for multiple countries/regions, international agencies & NGOs, and by individual country. They also have information on Living and Working Overseas, Networking Tips and Pointers, Interviewing Advice, and International Business Resources.
• 4INTERNATIONAL CAREERS & JOBS has reviewed and selected 2200 top job sites in 190 countries.
• EURES - The European Job Mobility Portal promotes the free movement of labor throughout Europe. In addition to providing job placement services and advice, EURES provides information and solutions to problems related to cross-border commuting.
• CDS International programs offer internships and fellowships, State Department public diplomacy initiatives, J-1 visa services, work-study programs, and study tours in Argentina, Germany, Russia, Spain, and the United States. They also have a list of resources such as Interview Tips, Resume/Cover Letter Tips, Networking, Trainee/Internship Tips, and Job Fair Tips.
• Foreign Labor Certification Data Center - US Department of Labor - A good site that includes prevailing wage determinations and disclosure databases for temporary and permanent programs.
• BusinessWeek's list of the top 200 companies that received the most visa petition approvals in 2007.
• U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services site contains information on employment authorization.
• Global Health Council's mission is to save lives by improving health throughout the world. Their Career Network includes domestic and international employment listings from governmental organizations, NGOs, academic institutions, foundations, and private corporations. You must become a member (student membership is $60) to access job postings.
• Online Job Search Tips for International Students from OneDayOneJob.
• Faayda.com is a job search engine for all India jobs.
• taaza.com currently has the following verticals - News, Jobs, Loan, Insurance, and Games. In the coming months, it will feature Movies, Travel, and other vertical - original and aggregated content as well as user generated content to make the web more accessible from a single place for Indian users.

Advanced Study

• Brain Track has guides for finding schools, such as by religion, and articles on topics such as financial aid, accreditation, transfers, and international studies in the US. They link to over 10,000 university and college sites throughout the world.
• Studytimes.com link to information on studying in the United States provides comprehensive information about education in the U.S.
• International Student.com is an online portal for those looking to continue their education overseas. Financial information, study centers, internship programs, student immigration, health insurance, blogs, and more!
• Peterson's Graduate Planner: International Student Edition - Get the advice and information you need to plan your education in the U.S. Sections include Get Started, Find a School, Prepare for Tests, and Pay for School.

Financial Aid

• International Education Financial Aid This site has information on financial aid, college scholarship and grant information for U.S. and international students wishing to study abroad.

• EmbassyWorld is a directory and search engine of the world's embassies and consulates.
• U.S. Department of State websites of U.S. embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions.
• The Electronic Embassy - Connecting foreign embassies and international resources found around the world. Currently includes a directory of all embassies in Washington DC.
