Williams College Museum of Art Workshops

With the aid of Williams College students, the education department at the Williams College Museum of Art runs a workshop program, attended by over 100 teachers every year. Massachusetts teachers may receive Professional Development Points for participation in workshops such as Architecture in the Classroom, and Contemporary Art and Social Issues.

Williams College Summer Program for Teachers

Teachers from schools in Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Florida, North Adams, Savoy and Williamstown are invited to attend any or all of the professional development programs offered at Williams in the summer. Workshops during the summer of 2000 covered a range of disciplines, including Computer Science, Philosophy, Science, Biology and Humanities. The courses provide credit that will help teachers meet requirements for recertification, although the courses are also open to teachers not receiving credit.

Classroom Opportunities

America Counts

Similar to the America Reads initiative, America Counts is a new federal program aimed to assist students with numeracy. Williams College work-study students and volunteers tutor at the Williamstown Elementary School, training and working there with a teacher or supervisor.

America Reads

As a part of a national literacy initiative to help all children read at their grade level, Williams College students are available to tutor Williamstown Elementary School students in reading. This may be a work-study job for Williams Students, or a volunteer effort. Tutors are trained and evaluated by a teacher or supervisor at the Elementary School.

Kidspace at MASSMoCA

Kidspace is a child centered contemporary art gallery and studio space that is a collaboration between WCMA, The Clark Art Institute and Mass MoCA. Programming includes field trips by local schools, family events, children’s classes, teacher workshops, and ongoing art related activities. Williams College students and community members can volunteer to help with art projects, gallery events, evaluation, and more.

Williams College Museum of Art Tours

With the aid of Williams College students, the education department at the Williams College Museum of Art runs a program of school tours, workshops for teachers, after school programs, and other family events throughout the year. Over 5000 children visit WCMA each year on field trips.

Williams Community Building Program

The Williams Community Building Program is a multiracial group of students who work with the Williams College Multicultural Center. Williams student Community Builders work to foster a sense of community in and around Williams College by leading workshops and discussions about topics such as diversity, prejudice, racism, sexism, homophobia, and community building. The program defines community not just as a group of people living together, but as honest communication among people and groups, respect for different identities and cultures, and genuine caring for one another. The Community Builders are available to create and tailor workshops for local high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools.

Williams Theatre

The Williams College Department of Theatre produces mainstage productions each semester at the Adams Memorial Theater. The department routinely publicizes these productions to local educators, and often provides large blocks of free tickets to school groups. Past productions have included the Shakespearean comedy, “Twelfth Night,” Ariel Dorfman’s, “Death and the Maiden,” Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal,” and Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot.”
