BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Attributed to Manohar (North India, Mughal)
Shah Jahan Receives a Buck, ca. 1630

Attributed to the artist Manohar, this spare and unfinished work depicts Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal. Although some loss of paper from the original sheet has occurred, the psychology of the subjects, both human and animal, remains apparent. The artist worked during the "golden age" of Mughal art about the middle of the 17th century.
