OPTIONAL LECTURES (Theory and Sabermetrics/Baseball)
NOTE:
Remember, these lectures are entirely optional. In the theory lectures we'll
delve more deeply into the theory in one series, talking about concepts from
analysis, exploring vector analysis in greater detail and concluding with proofs
of the three Big Theorems (Green, Gauss and Stokes). Attending these lectures
(or not!) will neither help nor hurt your grade in the class. The purpose of
these lectures is to cover the same amount of material that is done at colleges
and universities with 15 week semesters. In the baseball meetings, we'll discuss
applications of mathematics to baseball, and use that as a springboard to
discuss modeling and applications.

Voting

While at
first this doesn't seem related to sabermetrics, there is an interesting
connection. People vote on numerous sports issues, ranging from MVP and Cy
Young Winners to rankings in college football. While the stats we know and
love are often used by the voters, the voting system itself is very
important, and often determines who wins! Below are some places to start
getting a sense of this vast subject.
