General Information
I strongly recommend that you read the relevant sections before coming to class: lectures (hopefully) will be more understandable if you’ve already looked at the material at home. You are not expected to understand all of what you’ve read (at least, not at first). Just read the sections before class. Also, I strongly urge you to read the review material (Chapter 0) in the book. I strongly suggest that you consider working in groups / discussing in groups. The best groups are small (two to four people), with everyone of similar ability. Finally, 8:30am is early: if you want to bring coffee or tea to class, that's fine.
Questions
All questions are good questions, and you’re probably not the only one missing something. Also, as you will soon know, I often make algebraic mistakes, so don’t be afraid to speak up.
Office Hours
Mondays, Weds and Fridays: 7:45am to 9:00am in Math Tower Room 530.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 7:45am to 8:20am in Math Tower Room 530.
If you are going to come to my office, please try and email me ahead of time.
MSLC and Help Sessions
Go to MSLC Tutoring for information about tutoring, and Graphing Calculator Workshop for help with Graphing Calculators. There will be two help sessions:
Part I will be on Tuesday,
January 6th from 5:30 - 7:00pm in CH 004.
Part II will be on Thursday, February 5th from 5:30 - 6:30pm in CH 004.
Homework
Homework is to be submitted in section on time. If you are not going to be in class that day, please give the homework to someone else to hand in. If the HW is going to be late for a legitimate reason, let your section leader know in advance. Late HW will not be accepted. All homework must be stapled and neat -- unstapled or sloppy homework will not be graded.
Rain Forests/Format
I care about them as much as you, but I care about eyesight and speed of reading more. Please waste paper! Do not try to squish everything onto one page. Have it clear where one problem ends, and the next begins. Space things out so it can be read easily. Remember, it’s to your own benefit to have your grader happy when looking at your HW. If we have to go searching for your answers.... Make sure you answer the question (and the question that is assigned!), and that it is clear where your answer is. This should be at the end of the problem! Also, make sure you write your name and section on your homework.
Mistakes
If you do make a mistake, cross out neatly, or take a new piece of paper. Please do not put notes such as ‘see end of HW’. Answer the questions in order. If this means you use an extra piece of paper, come to my office and I’ll reimburse you.
Exams
There will be two midterms (probably Jan 28 and Feb 18). See the main course homepage for information on the times. If you are not able to take the exams (midterms, final) at the regularly scheduled time, please contact me a week before the exam, with a note (from your employer, professor who teaches a class at the same time, et cetera) explaining the conflict.
