Camera delle Imprese

La denominazione, recente, e rifertia ai soggetti che compaiono nei medaglioni del fregio: imprese portate dai Gonzaga. L'impresa, detta anche divisa, e un elemento simbolico costituito in genere da un'immagine (corpo dell'impresa) e da un motto (anima dell'impresa), quest'ultimo di norma in lingua straniera. Esistono molto imprese formate di solo corpo e poche altre consistenti unicamente nel motto. Le imprese esprimo, in modo cifrato, ideali, virtu, situazioni, talora eventi personali, significativi per il committenti. In alcuni medaglioni i motti, documentati in altre raffigurazioni dell'impresa, non sono scritti, o le scritte sono diventate illeggibili.

Room of the Devices

The name, recently given to the room, refers to the subjects of the medallions in the frieze: devices (emblems) of members of the Gonzaga family. A device (or emblem) is symbolic and generally consists of a picture (the 'body' of the device) and a motto (the 'soul' of the device), usually in a foreign language. Many devices have only a 'body', while a few are composed only of the 'soul'. The devices express in code the ideals, virtues, situations and even personal events significant to the patron who commissioned them. In some cases the mottoes, found in other depictions of the device, were not written out, or the writing has become illegible.
