Camera degli Stucchi

L'ambiente presenta una decorazione, assai rara nel primo Cinquecento, affidata ai soli rilievi a stucco, senza interventi pittorici, al di fuori delle campiture uniformi nei riquadri della volta e dei finti marmi nelle nicchie all pareti di testa. Lo stucco, in questo caso specifico, e costituito da una miscela di calce, sabbia e gesso, che si impasta con acqua. L'indurimento, lento e graduale, concede all'artista tempi adeguati per la modellazione delle forme. I rilievi a stucco imitano il marmo, nel colore bianco crema e nella politezza delle superfici, e nel Rinascimento si ispirano agli ornati plastici scoperti all'interno delle antiche rovine.

Room of the Stuccoes

The decoration of this room -- stucco relief without painting, except for the uniformly painted background of the vault reliefs and the imitation mable in the niches of the end walls -- is very rare for the early sixteenth century. This particular stucco is made of a mixture of line, sand and chalk, mixed with water, which hardens very slowly so that the artist has more time to model it. The creamy white color and polished surface of the stucco make it seem like marble. Sculptural decorations discovered in the ruins of Roman buildings were the inspiration for Renaissance works such as these reliefs.
