The Miller Papers

At present, there are fifty-six boxes, or roughly 30 linear feet, of archival materials in the Miller Papers. The collection is organized according to a system, established by George P. Brockway, dividing Miller’s writings into two general periods (prior to 1970 and 1970 and later) and then subdividing them according to the type of item—e.g., essay, essay draft, letter. In addition to these two major sections, the Miller Papers include boxes containing Miller’s letters to Brockway, miscellaneous items, and the edited typescripts and other dead matter from each of the first five volumes published by W. W. Norton & Company. Since Brockway concluded his work of organizing the Miller Papers, other materials have been added. Most notable among these are the papers (primarily correspondence) added by Edward A. Hoyt, the “Collection of letters and papers contributed by Eugene R. Miller,” and the typescripts of courses (taught by Miller in the 1950s) added by Joseph P. Fell.

Sources for Published Works

All of the writings that form the content of Miller’s published works are to be found, in their unedited form, in the archives. A detailed listing of all of the Sources used is available. This set of documents is of interest to those seeking to date Miller’s essays or to find the location of the original document in the box and folder system of the Miller Papers.
