The History of Reiki

The Japanese word "Reiki" translated means: life (Rei) energy (ki). Originating in the Tibetan Sutras as a Buddhist practice almost 3,000 years ago, Reiki was re-introduced in Japan in the 19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui. The history of Reiki is known today through the verbal stories passed along by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a student of Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who himself learned the practice of Reiki from Dr. Mikao Usui. Mrs. Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to Hawaii in the 1930's after visiting a dying sister in Japan, and in 1936 her teacher Dr. Chujiro Hayashi joined her to promote Reiki treatment and make Takata a Reiki Master. Just before WWII, Hayashi summoned Takata back to Japan where he passed the leadership of Reiki on to her just before he died. From 1975, until her own death in 1980, Takata trained twenty-two Reiki Masters (Herron).
