Cigarette Smoking

Introduction

Have you ever smoked a cigarette? There is probably a 50% chance that you have (Rigotti, 2000). Do you remember what that first drag felt like? Did you get a headache, feel nauseous, or did you enjoy it?

If you are surfing this page as a member of the Williams community, you may notice that there seems to be few smokers on the campus. Although Williams is seen as a smoke-free community, cigarette smoking is a rising problem on most college campuses across the nation.

Smoking is considered a high-risk behavior, or a behavior that causes morbidity and premature mortality. What causes people to smoke in the first place, why do they continue to smoke, and what prevents them from quitting? These may be a few of the questions you may be asking. To a nonsmoker, it may seem puzzling why people cannot just throw their cigarettes away and go on living their lives. There is, however, much more to this picture that you will uncover as you browse this website, so let's boogie.
