HOW ARE YOU GOING TO COPE WITH STRESS?

Problem based coping: Increases the opportunities for one to exert personal control over the situation or oneีs response to that situation. Works best for situations in which the stressor is controllable.

examples: START SMALL, SEEK SUPPORT, ACCEPT THOSE THINGS WHICH CAN'T BE CHANGED, MAKE A PLAN OF ATTACK

Emotional-focused coping: Involves psychological distancing from the stressor and allowing oneีs self to express the emotional strain they are under. However, this method is not as adaptive for stressors that are controllable. Rather, this method works best for managing stressors that can not be controlled (Friedman lecture, 2001).

examples: STEP BACK, TAKE A NAP, RELAX, DISTRACTION, VENT, CRY, EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS
