The History of BPD

While the information and discussion about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) first began in 1930, originally those with BPD were thought to have a range between neurosis and psychosis. It was often very hard to diagnose BPD because it was often characterized as adolescent emotional turmoil. In the 1950's it was frequently believed that these kids would simply grow out of their problems, but they did not. Throughout adolescence, they were highly vulnerable to stress, which resulted in problems with friends and family, and difficulties in basic functioning among other things. However, it was later established that adolescent emotional instability only exacerbated the problem and brought it out further, and in fact did not cause it.
