Borderline Personality Disorder

 

 

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by reoccuring patterns of volatile and intense interpersonal relationships, unstable self-image, dramatic mood swings, and impulsiveness that emerges in adolescence and often results in destructive behavior.



Living with BPD is often compared to walking on eggshells.

 

BPD Statistics:

*5 to 10 million people in the United States suffer from this disorder*

*the largest number or rates diagnosed with BPD occurs between the ages of 19-34*

*women are diagnosed with BPD 2 to 4 times more often than men*

*nonwhite people develop borderline at a considerably higher rate than white people do*

*50% of BPD patients suffer from major depression*

*BPD patients frequently suffer from the eating disorders, Anorexia-Nervosa and Bulemia-Nervosa*

*21-67% of BPD patients can be categorized as substance abusers*

*BPD patients are often impulsive self-mutilators; harming oneself can be seen as a coping mechanism and a form of catharsis*

*3-9% of BPD patients commit suicide*
