Diagnosis of BPD

When diagnosing BPD, doctors look for certain speficic behavior that is the halmark of this disorder. Intense beginnings and terminations of relationships and often cutting of contact with a member of a family are both strong indications of BDP. Due to the impulsive nature of those with BPD, suicide attempts, self-mutilation, bingeing, and purging are all potential indicators of BPD. The emergence of psychotic-like symptoms under stress is also a signifier of BPD. Doctors also look for patterns of impulsivitiy, and specifically, sexual promiscuity, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling, extensive money-spending, and even shoplfiting. Looking at the past also provides a window when diagonising BPD. It is very common that people with BPD have been sexually, emotionally or physically abused in the past, which contributes to their present problems.
